The story begins with John Wick (Keanu Reeves), a retired assassin mourning the death of his wife, Helen. As her final gift, Helen leaves John a puppy named Daisy to help him cope with his grief. John's peaceful life is shattered when a group of Russian thugs, led by Iosef Tarasov, the arrogant son of a powerful crime lord, Viggo Tarasov, breaks into his home, steals his prized car, and kills Daisy.
Unbeknownst to them, John Wick is no ordinary man—he's a former assassin known as "Baba Yaga" (The Boogeyman) and feared throughout the criminal underworld. Fueled by grief and rage, John comes out of retirement to exact vengeance. What follows is a relentless, action-packed journey as John dismantles Viggo's criminal empire, ultimately killing both Iosef and Viggo.
After avenging Daisy, John tries to return to a peaceful life, but his past catches up with him. Santino D'Antonio, an Italian crime lord, demands that John honor a "marker" (a blood oath) by assassinating Santino's sister, Gianna, so he can take her place on the High Table—a council of powerful crime lords. When John refuses, Santino destroys his home.
Forced to comply, John travels to Rome and completes the task, but Santino betrays him, putting a bounty on his head to cover his tracks. Hunted by assassins worldwide, John fights his way back to New York, where he kills Santino in the sanctuary of the Continental Hotel—a sacred ground where killing is forbidden. This act breaks the rules, leading to John's excommunication from the underworld.
With a $14 million bounty on his head, John is declared "excommunicado," meaning he loses all protections and resources within the underworld. Pursued by countless assassins, John fights to survive while seeking help from old allies, including the Bowery King and Sofia, a former friend.
John confronts the High Table and pledges his fealty in exchange for his life. However, he soon discovers their betrayal and decides to wage war against the entire system. The movie ends with a severely injured John being rescued by the Bowery King, who proposes an alliance to take down the High Table.
John continues his mission to dismantle the High Table. He travels across the globe, confronting old allies and enemies while facing the Marquis Vincent de Gramont, a High Table member tasked with eliminating him. John challenges the Marquis to a duel, seeking a path to freedom.
In the climactic duel, John faces off against the Marquis' chosen champion, Caine, a blind assassin and John's old friend. Using cunning and skill, John wins the duel, killing the Marquis and seemingly securing his freedom. However, severely wounded, John collapses on the steps of a cathedral, reflecting on his wife, Helen, before the screen fades to black.
