Venom is a superhero film from the Sony Spider-Man Universe, featuring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, a journalist who becomes the host for an alien symbiote named Venom. The movie blends action, sci-fi, and dark humor to tell the origin story of this iconic Marvel antihero.
Eddie Brock is an investigative journalist living in San Francisco. He’s known for his bold and confrontational reporting. Eddie’s life takes a downturn when he investigates Carlton Drake, the founder of the Life Foundation, a powerful corporation conducting secretive and unethical experiments. Eddie’s aggressive questioning during an interview with Drake leads to his firing, and his fiancĂ©e, Anne Weying, also loses her job due to his actions, causing their breakup.
The Life Foundation recovers alien symbiotes from a crashed spacecraft and begins experiments to bond them with human hosts. Their goal is to create a new species capable of surviving in space. However, the experiments often result in the host's death.
One of Drake’s scientists, Dr. Dora Skirth, becomes disillusioned with the unethical methods and secretly contacts Eddie. She helps him infiltrate the facility, where Eddie encounters one of the symbiotes. The alien bonds with Eddie, giving him superhuman abilities but also a hunger for survival.
The symbiote, calling itself Venom, begins communicating with Eddie, creating a chaotic and humorous dynamic. Venom grants Eddie incredible powers, including super strength, agility, and the ability to shapeshift parts of his body into weapons. However, the symbiote's presence also takes a toll on Eddie’s body. As Eddie tries to adjust to his new reality, he learns that Venom was part of an alien invasion plan but has since changed its mind after bonding with Eddie.
Drake becomes aware of Eddie’s bond with Venom and sends mercenaries to capture him. Meanwhile, another symbiote named Riot, more powerful and malicious than Venom, bonds with Drake. Riot plans to bring more symbiotes to Earth to take over the planet.
Eddie and Venom form a reluctant partnership to stop Riot and Drake. Venom, influenced by Eddie's humanity, decides to betray its own kind and protect Earth. Anne, still caring for Eddie, temporarily bonds with Venom to rescue him in a critical moment, showcasing the symbiote’s adaptability.
The final showdown occurs at the Life Foundation’s launch pad, where Drake and Riot attempt to send a spacecraft to bring more symbiotes to Earth. Eddie and Venom fight Riot in a high-stakes battle. Despite Riot’s superior strength, Eddie and Venom manage to destroy the spacecraft, killing both Riot and Drake in the process.
After defeating Riot, Eddie and Venom agree to coexist, with Venom promising to only harm "bad people." Eddie resumes his life as a journalist, now with Venom as his secret ally. In a mid-credits scene, Eddie interviews Cletus Kasady, a deranged serial killer, setting the stage for the sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
